the “first” one…

Five years ago we moved to Kingsport, Tennessee for my husband to start his Family Medicine Residency program. We were so excited about our new venture in a new town, a new state, surrounded by new people, while living in a “new to us” house. We had already been married for four years, he had just completed four years of medical school, I had just finished my first year of teaching in Kentucky, and this was the first time we were going to live in a house. Not an apartment, not a duplex, but a house!

Unfortunately, we moved right before school was set to begin so I didn’t luck in to a teaching job that fall. So there I was, in a new town, a new state, surrounded by new people, living in a “new to us” house, without a day job. I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I had never been in that situation before.

The first few weeks were occupied unpacking boxes, decorating, doing yardwork, discovering our new town, getting to know new people at church and his new residency program, but then I got bored. Don’t get me wrong, it was nice being able to stay home and do practically anything I wanted to do. We had our two dogs, one was still in the “puppy phase”, who I kept busy walking and playing. I cooked ALOT and it was satisfying to keep the hubby’s belly happy. The town was gorgeous and it was so much fun discovering all the new places to visit and restaurants we could eat at, mind you that didn’t happen too often because, again, we had little to no money on a medical resident’s salary. Our rental house though, it became one of our favorite places ever!

It was an old quaint house the owner had purchased and flipped. So much work had gone in to this house and boy did we get to reap the benefits! That house became my sanctuary ya’ll. We had little to no money, knew no one, I didn’t have a job (besides substitute teaching here and there), we were six hours away from family, but I tried my best to make that house a home. I decorated and rearranged furniture weekly, it became my hobby. I found inexpensive ways to make our house look inviting and comfortable, I made things instead of buying them. That next spring we also created our first garden. Oh what fun we had! I found myself finding no problem keeping occupied while he worked an insane amount of hours away from home.

In the midst of doing all of these fun things I was also blogging about them. If I cooked it, I blogged about it. If I crafted it, I blogged about it. If I decorated a room, I blogged about it. It really was so much fun for me to share my new passion of being a housewife. It was a nice way to share our lives with our family and friends back home too. But then, the best thing happened…

I got a teaching job!  Needless to say, at that point the blog went out the window. It was fun while it lasted but there was no way I would be able to keep up with being a first year teacher in Tennessee AND upkeep a personal blog at home. You know what though? I was totally okay with it.

So here I am, six years later, starting a blog again.

A blog about our everyday lives. A blog I hope will inspire you. A blog I hope will introduce you to things. A blog I hope you will stay tuned for.

As my three year old son says on the daily, “Let’s do dis!”
