Sweet summer time. The breeze blowing across your face, the sun shining down, birds chirping, frogs croaking, kids playing…it’s a glorious thing! Until the bugs creep in…and basically attack you.
Here in Kentucky mosquitos are thick. Once the sun starts setting you are practically swarmed by mosquitos unless you are doused in deet. It’s no fun. Not to mention ticks, they seem to be everywhere!
Once we moved to the farm we truly enjoyed being outside, until the sun started to set. The first summer we were here those mosquitos wouldn’t let us enjoy anything outside! It’s no fun to be slapping mosquitos off of you while trying to enjoy the outdoors. I wasn’t going to be slathering the twins in deet either so we just went in the house when we started to get bites.
But I wasn’t having it. Surely there was something we could do to deter the nasty things away, right? So to the internet I went. I came across a blogger who had success with some products. She, too, wanted to enjoy her outdoor space and took it upon herself to find a way! Where there’s a will…
I decided I would try the same things she used, but I honestly didn’t have high hopes due to the bugs being SO thick here. But what did we have to lose?
After 30 days of using these two products we noticed a huge change! Not only were we no longer being bitten by mosquitos but there weren’t near as many flies swarming around. It seriously changed the way we lived around here that second summer on the farm. After two months of use we noticed ticks not being as prominent. The bugs were almost non-existent!
Let me explain the two products for you.
The dynatrap is take on the traditional bug zappers. You know, the ones that your grandparents had that practically bolted lightning and made the worst sound and smell every time a bug flew to it? Well, the dynatrap draws the insects in and sucks them like a vacuum down to a bottom canister. They live the rest of their life in the canister and you simply have to empty it every month or so depending upon how full it gets.
We have the one-acre coverage Dynatrap and I, luckily, found a special on Zulily last spring that had them for a great price. Unless you have a large property, a half-acre Dynatrap will more than likely work great for you.
I found one on Amazon at a great price, click here to purchase.
Be sure to read the recommended placement instructions that come with it for best results.
This is a concentrate you mix with water and spray throughout your property. I spray this every 20-30 days during the summer months, routinely spraying it gives us the best results. From what I have read, this spray is effective at not only killing ticks and mosquitos, but, if sprayed regularly, will stop the life cycle of those insects. How awesome is that?
I always spray the following areas:
-the perimeter of our house
-all bushes and landscaping near our house
-six feet up the sides of trees
-the lawn of areas we use most
This concentrate is 100% natural, kid safe, pet safe, and has never killed any plant or tree I’ve sprayed it on. Another great thing? It kills fleas too! So those of you who have dogs, this is a great product for you! I cannot remember the last time our dogs had fleas. I’m glad to know they’re being killed every year around our house for our sweet poochy pups.
Purchase yours here.
You’ll also need a sprayer, I found a 2-gallon option here.
Again, read over all the instructions that come with the product before using for best results.
If you have a problem with insects like we did, I urge you to try out this combination. When used routinely, you will notice a huge difference in your outdoor space.
We are able to enjoy our outdoor space any hour of the day and it is so nice to relax and not be bothered by pesky insects. No more itchy mosquito bites and not near as many ticks. We are able to eat dinners outside without being bothered by flies and it makes for a much more enjoyable meal.
That, my friends, is priceless to us.
I discovered these products through Emily at Eleven Gables Blog, find it here. She’s super talented, has an amazingly beautiful home, and the cutest chicken coop I’ve seen! Go check her out.
